Copernicus Marine Data in Ocean Models and for Operational Applications Hamburg This user training event being organised by EUMETSAT on behalf of the European Commission as part of the Copernicus Programme, together with its Satellite Application Facility on Ocean and Sea Ice (OSI), the COST Action ES1402 “Evaluation of Ocean Synthesis” and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany (BSH). The key objective of this Workshop is to: Select appropriate data and/or products from the ocean related Copernicus data providers and Services, for tasks in the fields of a) Ocean / Earth System Modelling and b) Operational Ocean Applications. The variables addressed will be SST, wind/stress, sea ice, ocean colour, and related products; Apply these data / products in: a) Ocean and Earth System Modelling; b) Operational tasks. Discuss applications of Copernicus Marine Data and Products with other experts in the area.

Advanced Webinar: Accuracy Assessment of a Land Cover Classification In last year’s ARSET Advanced Webinar: Land Cover Classification with Satellite Imagery, attendees learned the basic steps to create a supervised land cover classification. The next step to using land cover classifications is being able to evaluate the performance of a land cover map using accuracy assessments. This training will equip attendees to conduct an accuracy assessment on a land cover map and identify which classes might be misrepresented. Course Dates: Two, 2 hour sessions. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays, February 13 and 20, 2018, at 11:00-13:00 or 23:00-01:00 EST (UTC-5). The session is broadcast twice per day to allow for international participation.

Introduction to Using the VIC Hydrologic Model with NASA Earth Observations Hydrologic modeling is useful for flood, drought, and water resources management. The Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) Model uses inputs to better understand hydrological processes in near real-time. Many of the inputs are available from NASA remote sensing and Earth system models, allowing the model to provide soil moisture, evapotranspiration and runoff as outputs. Together with precipitation data, these outputs provide quantitative assessment of a regional water budget. This introductory training will include an overview of the model, sources of satellite-derived input data, and implementation of the model. Course Dates: Three, 1 hour sessions. Sessions will be held on Thursdays, February 15 – March 1 from 09:00 – 10:00 and 18:00 – 19:00 EST (UTC -5). The session is broadcast twice per day to allow for international participation.

Baltic+ 2018 - Online Phase Online The Baltic+ course is a joint initiative of the National Meteorological Services of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland, who join the forces in order to increase the knowledge in skills in the use of satellite observation data and to create a platform for exchanging ideas, applications and knowledge. This is a blended course, composed of a 3 weeks online phase and a 3 days face-to-face phase. The online phase will occur from 19 February to 09 March 2018 and is mandatory for classroom participants. The classroom phase will deepen the topics discussed during the Online phase. The online (asynchronous) component will include reading materials, exercises and collaborative case study preparatory work. This will take three weeks, including approximately 4 hours of individual work per week. The course will finish with a three-day-classroom course that will consist of exercises, presentations, group work and finalization of case studies started during the online phase.

The purpose of the event is to develop skills in using data from EUMETSAT's Copernicus Marine Data Stream for oceanographic applications. We will focus on the application of data from Sentinel-3. The online phase will be followed by a classroom training, held in Riga, Latvia, 16 to 20 April 2018. Please note that this is an advanced warning to help potential participants to plan and organise; however the performance of the course is pending the approval by the European Commission of EUMETSAT’s input to the Copernicus Work Programme 2018. We anticipate that we will get the approval until the beginning of December. EUMETSAT will keep you posted.

Operational Marine Forecasting using EUMETSAT's Copernicus Marine Data Stream - Online Phase The purpose of the event is to develop skills in using data from EUMETSAT's Copernicus Marine Data Stream for marine weather forecasting to professionals with some previous experience. We will focus on the application of data from Sentinel-3, Jason-3 and use of associated data such as EUMETSAT’s Scatterometers. This is a blended course, composed of a 2 weeks online phase and a 5 days face-to-face phase. The online phase will occur from 2 to 13 April 2018 and is mandatory for classroom participants. The classroom phase will deepen the topics discussed during the Online phase. The online (asynchronous) component will include recorded lectures, modules, readings and quizzes. This will take two weeks, including approximately 3 hours of individual work per week. The course will finish with a Workshop phase that will take place in Lisbon from 4 to 8 June 2018, with practical sessions, supported by lectures on how to make an efficient operational use of the data. Completion of the online phase is a prerequisite for the Workshop.
